This paper assesses three of these policy initiatives: input credit provision for smallholder producers of selected cash crops including cotton, the proposed creation of a Cotton Board, and the emergence in 2003 of District Council levies as a point of conflict between local governments and cotton companies. The purpose of the paper is to provide guidance to public and private decision makers regarding key modifications which may need to be made to these policies to ensure continued healthy development of the sector. |

This review describes that due to rapid globalization, vulnerability in different areas affects human life. With rapid population growth, securing the inherent vulnerability of this relationship, whether social, economic, or environmental, has to be central to efforts to achieving sustainable development. The vulnerability of agricultural systems varies with geographic location, time, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental resources. The capacity to mitigate and to adapt to climate-change impacts is strongly related to the future development paths. The socioeconomic and, even more so, the technological characteristics of different futures strongly affect emissions, hence the extent and pace of the impacts of climate change, as well as the capability... |

On several locations in Germany and Switzerland, new and local varieties of winter wheat were compared to the variety "Bussard" in trial plots with 2-4 replications. Among other parameters, baking quality and gluten content were analised and discussed. |

A growing consumers’ awareness of human health’s risks, environmental fragility, and animal welfare has boosted organic production of foods. Due to their high production costs, however, organic products tend to retail at a higher prices than their non-organic counterparts. This premium price exposes organic products to fraud and counterfeiting, which, in addition to administrative controls, call for confirmatory assessments of the organic identity. Authentication of organic products is a complex task, which requires the identification, quantification, and distribution analysis of multiple compounds which are considered discriminators (i.e., fingerprints) between organic and non-organic products. Unlike conventional analytical methods, in fact, identifying,... |

Most of the farmers in Switzerland won’t apply GMO farming. Their organisations support a five-year ban for the marketing of transgenic plants. However, in Switzerland there is no political discussion on co-existence as in the European community and their member states. In this study, the spatial aspects of coexistence of transgenic, conventional and organic farming in Switzerland are investigated. It shows that there are only 28 communities of 2848 where all farmers are bound by different labels to produce GMO-free. Most of these communities are situated in high altitude regions. In contrast, in arable regions of Switzerland, few farmers produce organic crops. In most of the communities in Switzerland, the simultaneous production with and without... |

According to the research studies conducted during last 20 years the wholesomeness and nutritive value of the organically produced crops is often higher than of conventional plant products. Organic crops contain less harmful substances (e.g. pesticide residues, nitrates) and more desirable compounds (e.g. vitamin C, flavonoids) than conventional ones. However, the impact of the organic food consumption on animal and human health and well being still remains almost unknown. Small experimental mammals fed organically showed in some experiments better health and fertility parameters, but much more research studies are needed in order to broaden our knowledge. Therefore a dietary intervention study on rats will be conducted at Warsaw Agricultural... |

In UK, animal health planning is being increasingly promoted and implemented in both the organic and conventional livestock sectors – health planning is compulsory for organic certification in the UK. The type health planning that is taking place and the health plans being used vary widely across the UK livestock industry. This study details how health and welfare plans are promoted and implemented by British Governments, industry quality assurance and organic certification bodies. Details of animal health and welfare planning activities taking place in other European countries are also detailed though these activities are limited compared to the UK. An analysis of the key principles of health and welfare plans and planning identified from these review... |
